Speed Limits and Control
- 1/20If you exceed the legal limit on a Kuwaiti highway
On most highways, the speed limit is 120 km/h. Driving beyond that can result in steep fines, demerit points, and even temporary license suspension.
When you drive too fast in an urban area
Urban streets are designed for slower traffic. Going too fast increases the risk of pedestrian accidents and often leads to radar tickets.
If your speed drops too low on fast roads
Highways and expressways have minimum speed requirements to maintain traffic flow. Driving too slowly can result in obstruction violations.
When you are near a school during operational hours
School areas have reduced speed zones, especially during opening and closing hours. Violating these zones can lead to double penalties.
If you go too fast through residential neighborhoods
Many residential streets are limited to 40 to 50 km/h. Excess speed in these areas endangers residents and attracts traffic fines.
When you are significantly over the posted limit
Going well beyond the posted limit can lead to black points on your license, large fines, and in some cases, court summons.
If you are recorded at very high speed
In Kuwait, extremely high-speed violations may result in the impoundment of your vehicle or motorcycle and further legal action.
When you are in a reduced speed zone due to weather
During fog, sandstorms, or rain, temporary limits are enforced for safety. Ignoring them can result in radar-based fines.
If you hit a speed bump too fast
Approaching a speed bump at high speed can damage your motorcycle and make you lose balance, posing a serious hazard.
When radar cameras are monitoring your route
Radar systems in Kuwait operate 24/7 and detect violations instantly. Theres no need for police presence to issue fines.
If you are riding through a work zone at high speed
Construction areas enforce reduced limits. Violations in these zones may result in doubled fines and increased enforcement.
When you don’t see speed signs but continue fast
In areas where limits are not clearly posted, standard road speed rules are enforced. Ignorance does not excuse a violation.
If you attempt to quickly slow down before cameras
Radar cameras track your average speed over distance. Braking near the end may not help you avoid a fine if your speed was high earlier.
When your tires are not roadworthy at high speeds
Riding fast with bald or under-inflated tires can cause blowouts or loss of control, leading to traffic penalties or accidents.
If you descend an incline too quickly
High speed while descending puts extra stress on brakes and reduces your ability to stop quickly, increasing accident risk.
When you are speeding at night in low-traffic zones
Visibility is reduced at night. Riding too fast increases reaction time and is monitored closely by patrol units.
If you miss a sudden change in the speed limit
Road signs sometimes change abruptly. You’re expected to reduce speed quickly and safely when limits drop.
When you are overtaking aggressively
Passing another vehicle does not excuse speeding. Enforcement still applies if you exceed the limit while overtaking.
If your bike has a faulty speedometer
Riders must maintain their motorcycles in good condition. A broken speedometer does not excuse a speeding violation.
When you are riding through a heavy pedestrian zone
Near malls, mosques, and public areas, reduced speeds are in effect. Going too fast here risks pedestrian injuries and fines.
